CENTENNIAL PLAZA AT LOUISIANA TECH UNIVERSITY Location: Ruston, LA Scope of Project: Commemorative Plaza, Clock Tower
Built to celebrate and honor the 100th anniversary of Louisiana Tech University, this project was funded by a self-assessed fee instated by the vote of the student population. Encompassing an entire city block, the plaza design eliminated all vehicular traffic and created a special space in the heart of the university's campus, specifically designed for the enjoyment and use of the students. Even though the vehicular traffic was eliminated, the design still allows for emergency vehicle access. .
At the center of the plaza, the massive clock tower acts as both a centerpoint for the plaza and a beacon for student life, with all parts of the plaza leading to it while all parts of the campus simultaneously emanate from it. Additionally, the physical characteristics of the tower correlate to the character of the surrounding buildings, acting as a sort of "heart" to the campus. As a further connection to student life, the clock tower illuminates in different colors as designated to celebrate and/or observe the university's various sports teams' respective wins and losses. Digital programming also allows the tower to resound the school's fight song or other appropriate calls and melodies on an as-needed basis.
